Bishop Ethel J Wilson
Bishop Ethel J Wilson
Jan 1904 – Feb 1996
Born in Jamaica on 1 January 1904, she was the third of eight children. Born again at the age of 12 and a woman whose noble prayer ministry gracefully weaved her into a beautiful model of divine truth.
She served in Jamaica on many mission fields. On one occasion along side Bishop Walters, they preached and gained over 50 converts in one meeting. On another occasion, whilst delivering the message from the Lord, “Behold I come quickly”, she was arrested and put in jail. However, she continued preaching the word with clarity and precision, singing, praying, and praising God, her motto being, “It is better to obey. God than man”.
Bishop Wilson (otherwise known as “Sister Ethel”) was the first Matron of the City Mission Orphanage and Training Centre in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1937 she was one of the first missionaries from the City Mission Church to travel to the USA where she later became the pioneer of the City Mission Church in Brooklyn, New York.
In 1994 she was highly honoured in Jamaica at a banquet given in her honour on her 90th birthday and on 2 September 1995 she was selected and placed on the Honour Roll of the Women of the Year in the USA.
On 23 February 1996, she went home to be with the Lord. Surely her life and example as a humane person with humility and a true child of God has influenced many that came in contact with her and loved her dearly.
Form Sister Ethel to Bishop Wilson, she has been a stalwart at the helm of the City Mission Church, a woman of excellence who had great compassion for mankind, had sown the seed of goodwill, demonstrating total commitment to God’s work and His people.
The work she had done and the life she lived still speaks for her.
